So, quite a few of you may know that `
ChewedKandi and I have been trying to work some issues regarding the definition of the vexel category here at dA. Some of you may also know that we have gotten absolutely fucking nowhere.
Firstly, have a bit of back story:
Many moons ago now, `
ChewedKandi and I were members of a popular message board. There was a small group of members there who created vector-like artworks in raster based programs, and some other members (such as Seth Wooley, who will be mentioned later) felt that referring to such raster based works as "vector" was incorrect and ill-fitting. Instead, the term "Vexel" was coined. The term, literally, means "Vector + Pixel" - that is, an artwork with vector-like elements, created in similar techniques to vector art, however, the result produced was entirely raster.
That's it. That's all that a vexel is. However, some people have taken it upon themselves to morph the definition into something that, in my honest opinion, is mildly ridiculous.
`
ChewedKandi has put a massive fucking effort into getting the definition changed back to the simplicity of what it really is, and has been belittled and ignored seemingly the whole way. I have to say that it's pretty insulting, and terribly upsetting: Considering that her and I were two of the people who literally inspired the term, you'd think that our opinion about the matter would mean something. But, go figure, to certain people of the community here, it means Jack Shit.
Given the hurtful responses to her attempts, `
ChewedKandi has decided to step down from her soapbox. She's tired of being ignored, and frankly, I'm tired of seeing her efforts go to waste. It's damn upsetting seeing such a dedicated member of a community actively trying to make a positive change, only to effectively be told that "It's too hard, it's easier if we just ignore it."
Bellow is a copy of `
ChewedKandi's
Journal Entry on the matter. I'd really appreciate it if you took the time to take a read, and go and comment on hers.
Quick Edit: It seems that the gallery information for vexels HAS changed, however, it still hasn't seemed to change anything in the minds of the GMs, or even really modify what the definition is considered to be here. There are still members submitting vectors into vexel, or digital media in which the artist claims to be vexel but isn't in it's entirety. It's nice to know that Shar got somewhere, but in the long run, despite all her work, it still seems like a giant kick in the testes.
After yet another occurance in the vexel definition debate, it left me so angry and frustrated I was sick. I felt knots in my stomach and just felt all giddy.
So I'm letting go... which will be great news to the powers that be... as they wont have me noting them and correcting their errors.
Truth be told, over the past couple of years or so, I have strongly disagreed with the redefinition of the term "vexel"...
Back in the day when we were naive digital artists making graphics for our website layouts of our personal websites... we would create raster images which mimic'd vector art. We were none the wiser... we thought it was vector. Until we were corrected by some, including the person who coined the term Seth Woolley.
I say we, this includes old skool vexellers such as *Sewwy and not the powers that be. The first being two new additions to the vexel community lets say. Who were not there at the words conception. Who are only educated in the new definition, the incorrect definition.
The whole word is modelled around 2 things... pixel and vector... this is how the word was formed. It was not the mixture of both raster elements and vector work... it was not the work of vector with a texture on. It was basically using the pen tool or lasso/fill tool to produce raster (pixel) layers which looked like vector art.
You have to ask yourself a couple of things...
Why would a word be coined for an art form which already exists? (ie vexel is not vector, why reclass a vector?)
Why would myself and others put so much of our time and effort into changing the definition back to the original?
Why did we go about wanting it to change to the original definition? Well because it's a memory, it's something to be proud of... being there at the conception of such a word, such a digital art form. To have it changed, it feels like it's not associated with our past, with our beginnings into digital art.
It's funny, before some people became a GM, they were vocal in supporting such a cause to get the definition back. Oh how times have changed.
Why am I posting this? I have to let it all out. We've went through the official routes of noting and even e-mailing $Moonbeam13 when we weren't getting responses from some people. Yes not all notes and queries were answered. Some people decided to nit pick at the finer details, the irrelevant details and not face the major issue in order to respond to the battle cry in their favour. After being assured that some day we'd talk about the redefinition... some day... sigh... I've lost my patience and I'm wanting to get over being angry at font on a screen.
And yes, to make it clear, I'm making comments at ^Jules1983 and ^shebid. I NEVER made it a personal thing when I brought up the issue of redefinition. NEVER. However you both took it personally and saw it as an insult to you both. I apologise for any offense I brought then and I do again. But this time. It is personal. The catty remarks and the sarcastic notes and comments... pathetic. Aimed at me on purpose. Resorting to these methods instead of responding. Be a woman and use your balls.
Oh wait... women don't have balls, there is something for you to nit pick at and skirt the issue.
Do you think I've got some sort of God complex - as I've been accused - because I passionately talk about these things and _know_ I am right? I was one of the original vexel artists, my work and others inspired the need for this word to be coined.
Do you think I do this as a personal attack to you? No... I'm not that petty.
Do you think I do this to be an attention whore? Frankly no, it brings negative light on myself and my work when you resort to petty comments and snides, disregarding anything I bring to your attention.
Do you think I do this for the lulz and for drama? No. Frankly I have better use for my time.
And it is with that, that I'm officially letting it rest from my side. You've won. I'll sit back in my throne, or heavenly cloud while feeding my pvc clad, pistol whipping bitches massage my feet and feed me pealed grapes and watch how wrong you are.

Your saying that you helped term the name, and therefore should have more weight, seems like a poor argument. Sometimes, things do evolve beyond what they originally meant - I honestly hadn't a clue that was why it was called that, but I know now
It just seems... I don't know, very high handed, perhaps? I was doing cosplay before anyone knew what cosplay was, and I abhor closet cosplay (pieces pulled from someone's closet to make an outfit of a specific character) but my being angry about what it's become, and wishing to seek a ban, or a name change on just that part (which was never originally intended to be called "cosplay" - that was only supposed to showcase original sewn garments) seems... wrong, given the evolution of the idea/concept/wording.
I do agree with you, though, that people need to be educated to a higher degree of the differences, but a somantics argument seems to be a little rough. Maybe pointing out to people what the major differences are between them, and the like? Helping in education more than anything?
Again, I'm very, very sorry to jump into this, not being a member of either side of the debate, and I honestly understand if you'd like to just hide this comment and delete it from your inbox, I will not be insulted in the slightest! I just thought, perhaps an outside perspective? Because everything I've read has involved the people who are close to it (as everything like this does~)
I'm sorry again! I hope I haven't completely insulted you or anything ^^~

I'll do my best to help educate people, as this has already vastly educated me on the subject (I've wanted to try vexel art, but as Photoshop's pen seems to hate me, I'll stick with vectors in Illustrator that doesn't want to hurt me

It's difficult to explain, I suppose. We're not trying to be high-and-mighty, we're just trying to get the term corrected to what we know to be a better definition.
Don't worry, you've not insulted me, it's honestly fine! <33 I wish I could just explain what Shar and I are trying to achieve. It's not about glory or trying to be holier-than-thou or anything, we just think that considering we were, you know, *there* when it was started that we'd have a bit of a better an idea as to what went on to fuel the term to start with than people who joined in a year or so later?
Ehhh IDK.

Please note thought, that Danie got married at the weekend, and therefore she's off work for a few days. The world tour is on the go right now too so priorities may not be in line with your expectations. You will get a response in due course though, I'm sure of that.
